Community announcement

Friends,

It's been an incredible eight years at Kol haKfar. We have inspiring lay-led prayer leadership by Asher, David, Eva, Benjamin, Jonathan and others; amazing hosts in Leora, Ben/Jennie, Benjamin/Ben, Jonathan/Malorie, Laura, Paul, Carrie and others; a welcoming and positive attitude to Jews across a wide spectrum of practice, sexuality, gender and origin; and of course, legendary gatherings for worship and celebration. All on Friday nights in downtown Manhattan, which lacks many resources available to Jews elsewhere.

We've truly created a community to take pride in. Apparently, others are proud of it too. As many have noticed, we're exceeding the limits of most living rooms. We'll be making a few changes to keep up with the times. (Feedback and constructive suggestions are needed and welcome.)

1) More meals: We're now offering meals with every gathering to try spread out spikes in attendance, and to have more fun. If you want to stay after services for the meal, please bring vegetarian food to share. If you're a host, please be willing to make or buy a simple main course to anchor the meal. Don't have time or cash? We can help coordinate shopping, bring food, or cook with you the night before -- and we're going to search for external funds to cover future hosting costs. We'll also be getting rid of RSVPs because it's too much to manage. Instead, we'll use the honor system. If you like eating, bring a side dish or dessert to share. As always, kashrut varies by host.

2) More money: A few helpful, smart, handsome friends are registering us as a religious organization so we can solicit tax-exempt funds. This means we'll need people to find money that's out there for groups like ours. We need your help. Please email us at kolhakfar@yahoo.com to volunteer your networking skills to find grants and angels. We don't need a lot.

3) More space: While we experiment with having meals every time, we also need to find a cheap, good-sized space we can use a few times a year for parties or gatherings when we have no hosts. Know of a space south of 34th Street that fits our lounge-core personality? Please let us know, or please start hunting for one. This alone will help us to continue to provide services to all.

This Friday the lovely Paul Fischer hosts the minyan for davening and a meal. Please join us and bring vegetarian food to share. Wine is nice and sometimes you have no time to buy food, but, if in doubt, please bring food.

Paul Fischer, 6:30pm
9 Barrow St., Apt. #5F
(between West 4th St and the intersection of Bleecker and 7th Ave South)

Friends,

Kol haKfar -- the Voice of the Village -- meets again this Friday night to celebrate Shabbat in a traditional egalitarian setting, and to enjoy a light kiddish. Since we're not having a meal there's no need to RSVP, but please do bring a tasty treat or some wine to share if you think of it.

Benjamin Pollack and Ben Wolf, 6:30pm
154 E. 29th St. Apt. 8A
(SW corner of 29th and 3rd)

See you soon!

February 5th

Friends,

Kol haKfar -- the downtown egalitarian minyan -- meets this Friday 2/5 to celebrate Shabbat and enjoy our monthly community meal, which will be vegetarian/milchig. Since space is tight we're cutting off RSVPs at 25 for the meal. First come, first served. All are welcome for tefillot. If there's spillover with a bunch of people who can't make the meal, perhaps those folk can host their own mini-satellite dinner. We'll coordinate over email if there's interest.

Please RSVP to kolhakfar@yahoo.com and say what you can bring. Side dishes are the key to happiness. Kosher wine is also nice.

Zachary Thacher, 6:30pm
41 Grove St, 4B -- between Bleecker and Bedford, just west of 7th Avenue South

Shavuah tov,

Kol haKfar

Our schedule:

Tu b'Shevat

Friends,

Thanks to Leora Singer for hosting and cooking a delicious meal last Leil Shabbat, especially since it wasn't an official meal night. Also, special shout outs to Max Gross for the kosher wine tasting and to our newest member, Jared Weinstein, for bringing yet another bottle of scotch. It was a merry evening, never mind the orange vodka that showed up at some point.

Friday night is Tu B'Shevat. There are two options downtown. If people would like to gather as a Kol haKfar crew, post your plans to the Kol haKfar wall on Facebook. All events require tickets in advance.

Stanton Street Shul -- hosts a dinner and program starting at 6pm. Go to the website to sign up. 180 Stanton Street, right by Clinton -- LES.

Chabad of Soho -- I know nothing about this new Chabad, but it seems worth checking out. They have a fun sounding celebration with drinks following "short" services. Kiruv time!

Our schedule:
Feb 5 -- Zachary Thacher in the West Village, with dinner
Feb 19 -- HOST NEEDED! Please email kolhakfar@yahoo.\com
March 5 -- Paul Fischer, with dinner
March 19th -- Carrie Kingsley in Union Square

January 8th, 2010 6:30pm

Friends,

Welcome to the new(ish) year. I hope it's a happy and healthy one for all. Big thanks to Carrie Kingsley for hosting an amazing Chanukah party last month. My personal highlight was the delicious food and the impromptu Salsa dance lesson. After all, they have Chanukah in Puerto Rico. Que rico!

This Friday (1/8) the lovely Laura Nova hosts us in her incredible apartment in the sky for a night of prayer, socializing and dinner. She's serving a Vegetable Moussaka, so she asks people to bring anything they like; North African or Mediterranean themes are appreciated. We're also looking for people to bring salad, fruit, challot, kosher wine, etc. Please RSVP to kolhakfar@yahoo.com to indicate what you can bring.

Friday Dec 18th is good luck!

Friends,

In honor of Shabbat and Chanukah, Carrie Kingsley will host a festive gathering at her place as replete with homemade latkes after davening. So yes, that means we'll be having three community Shabbat meals in a row. Crazy but real.

Please RSVP indicating what you can bring to this dairy/vegetarian meal. If you get this note via Yahoo or Facebook, please email us at kolhakfar@yahoo.com. Also, we need hosts for January 8th and 22nd. Please volunteer! The more divine sparks, the better. (Which is basically the Jewish way of saying instant karma. Sort of.)

Carrie Kingsley, 6:30pm
145 E. 16th St. Apt 7P
(NW corner of 3rd Ave)

See you Friday,

Kol haKfar

December 4th, 5770

Friends,

Hey there, I'm back from an amazing week in Jerusalem to celebrate my brother's wedding. While it always depresses me to leave Israel, I look forward to seeing everyone this Friday December 4th to celebrate Shabbat and enjoy a vegetarian potluck meal at Benjamin and Ben's lovely spot in Murray Hill at 6:30pm.

B & B maintain a kosher home, so please only bring dairy/vegetarian foods prepared in a kosher kitchen, hekshered packaged foods from a shop, or unprocessed foods such as fruit.

Please RSVP and indicate what you can contribute to the meal. We cap registration at 25 people, so please RSVP early to secure a place.

Benjamin Pollock and Ben Wolf, 6:30pm
154 E. 29th St. Apt. 8A
(SW corner of 29th and 3rd)

Kol tuv,

Zachary and Co.

Friday night November 6th 5770

Villagers --

Kol haKfar, the downtown egalitarian minyan with more sass than a Diablo Cody screenplay, meets this Friday night 11/6 for very un-Codyesque spirited prayer. Which we'll follow with a fleishig Shabbat potluck dinner, all at Jonathan and Malorie's lovely Lower East Side apartment.

This event is now closed due to lots of RSVPs, but if you want to come and didn't RSVP yet, email us in case we have a cancellation: kolhakfar@yahoo.com.

Jonathan Schecter and Malorie Ferrick's apartment
385 Grand St., Apt L13-04 -- 7pm
(Seward Park building)

Peace and love,

Kol haKfar

PS Diablo Cody is completely unaware of the existence of our minyan. But she's welcome anytime.
